Black Physicians of Canada is hosting our inaugural conference from October 12-15, 2023. It will be taking place at the Westin Castle Harbour Hotel in Toronto, Ontario. The theme for the conference is "I Am Because You Are: Celebrating Being Black in Medicine". The purpose of the conference will be to establish a community amongst Black physicians and physicians-in-training and center their wellness. Themes across the conference are advocacy, mentorship, leadership, education and wellness.

Khadija is a second-year medical student at McGill University and currently serves as the
Chairperson of the Black Medical Students' Association of Canada (BMSAC) for the 2023-2024
term. She is a dedicated and passionate individual who is committed to advocating for the
wellness of Black medical students.

Originally from Quebec, Canada, Khadija moved to Ontario in 2006, where she spent the
second half of her childhood in Toronto. She completed her undergraduate degree in Life
Science Co-op at McMaster University. Her research interests range from mental health of Black
youth and the COVID-19 pandemic to evaluating the current Black medical students'
perspectives.

Khadija is passionate about paying it forward by utilizing the wisdom and advice that was
shared with her and passing it down to the next generation of physicians. She provides advice
to pre-medical students in the Community of Support CASPer Prep Program (CPP), helping
them navigate one of the many parts of the medical school application process.

In addition to her academic pursuits, Khadija is an assistant rugby coach and enjoys reading,
knitting, crocheting, and spending time with her cat, Topo. She aspires to be a hardworking,
balanced physician who is always there for her community.

Overall, Khadija is an accomplished individual with a warm and friendly personality. Her
dedication to advocating for Black medical students and reducing barriers to entry in the field of
medicine is truly inspiring.

Dr. Jared Bullard was born in Nassau, Bahamas and moved to Winnipeg with his family when he was young. He is a product of Manitoba training, having completed his medical degree, including a BSc (Medicine) in HIV Immunology, Pediatric and Medical Microbiology residencies and a fellowship in Infectious Diseases all through the University of Manitoba. He is currently the Section Head of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Associate Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics & Child Health and Medical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases. During the SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Bullard helped define the methodology for studying the infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 and the clinical spectrum of COVID in Canadian children. He is currently working toward re-defining the epidemiology, diagnosis and management of congenital syphilis. Dr. Bullard is the Central Canada Representative for the Black Physicians of Canada and aims to increase Black proportional representation in medicine in Manitoba. His personal interests include his family (wife Dr. Pamela Skrabek, and future Dr. Bullards, daughter Taya and son Donovan), travelling and high level sarcasm.

Dr. Burgess is a family physician practicing out of Ottawa. She recognizes that there are some real tough things Black Physicians are at the intersection of experiencing in Canada: the pressures of medical education, being a physician in the age of information and misinformation and being Black (as the Black Lives Matter movement leaves little left to explain).

Her own wellness journey, unique to her, informs her desire for wellness to be normalized for Black physicians, living daily at the intersectionality of these aforementioned forces. She wants there to be a space and for us to make space for our whole selves in our lives, to be safe, to be at peace and enjoy our lives in Body, Mind, Heart and Spirit. She is excited to contribute to creating that space and community with all of us at Black Physician of Canada. Catch her next infusing meditative or movement practices in new spaces.

On the side, she makes sure to include some of her joys in every single day which include snuggling her family, napping and exploring the cello.

Esi Codjoe provides pragmatic and solutions focused legal advice to employers and employees, in both non-unionized and unionized private and public sector workplaces. That work includes assisting regulated professional organizations and regulated professionals with their unique employment, regulatory and governance needs.

Esi conducts workplace investigations, reviews, and assessments for both large and small employers. Her experience as a former adjudicator, including as a Vice Chair at the Human Rights Tribunal is particularly relevant to her investigation, review, and assessment work. She has extensive experience questioning witnesses, assessing evidence, and crafting written findings.

She is an experienced mediator and conducts mediations of workplace disputes. Her dispute resolution practice also includes coaching and facilitation work, such as coaching employees to resolve workplace conflicts.

Esi has expertise in teaching and training including in the areas of equity diversity and inclusion (“EDI”) and respect in the workplace. She provides tailored training to address each client’s unique needs. Esi taught employment law and labour relations at George Brown College and Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University). She frequently assists School Boards and Universities.

In 2018 Esi was named as one of Canadian Lawyer Magazine’s Top 25 lawyers, and in 2019 Lexpert named her as a Change Agent in Law.

Dr. OmiSoore H. Dryden (she/her/hers), a Black queer femme and associate professor, is the James R Johnston Endowed Research Chair in Black Canadian Studies, Faculty of Medicine; Director of the newly established Black Studies (in STEMM) Research Institute at Dalhousie University, and the co-lead of the national organization – The Black Health Education Collaborative. Dr. Dryden engages in interdisciplinary scholarship/research that focuses on Black LGBTQI communities, blood donation systems in Canada, anti-Black racism in healthcare, medical education, and Black health curricular content development. Dr. Dryden is Principal Investigator of several publicly funded research projects, including the funded project, Defining and Developing Black Health National learning competencies in Medical and Public Health Education in Canada. Dr. Dryden is the Principal Investigator of #GotBlood2Give / #DuSangÀDonner a research project that identified the barriers Black gay, bisexual, and trans men encounter with donating blood and analyzed how anti-Black homophobia/transphobia shapes blood system protocols in Canada, and co-convenor of national ad-hoc body – the National Coalition Confronting Anti-Black Racism in Donor Protocols. OmiSoore has published in peer-reviewed journals and book collections including the co-authored commentary Time to Dismantle Systemic Anti-Black Racism in Medicine in Canada” (2021) and the co-authored article “Black health Education Collaborative: the important role of Critical Race Theory in disrupting anti-Black racism in medical practice and Education” (2022) in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. Dr. Dryden was a member of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research National Anti-Racism External Advisory Committee, is a current member of the Black Feminist Health Science Studies International Collective, a board member of the Health Association of African Canadians, Nova Scotia.

Kema’s expertise is in building trusted and diverse cultural connections for clients with limited access to political decision-makers. She identifies and creates communication channels to support in creating dialogue and relationships to increase inclusion. Kema has been invited to share her political perspectives on major broadcast news outlets, including CBC and CTV.

Prior to joining Crestview Strategy, Kema worked in Mayor John Tory’s Office as a Stakeholder Relations and Outreach advisor, providing counsel and strategies to help support large non-profit organizations that host significant cultural and community festivals in the City of Toronto. Kema also managed the successful execution of many important cultural moments for Toronto, including the official recognition of the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent. In 2019, she played a significant role in The CivicAction Leadership Foundation’s DiverseCity Fellows program.

Kema earned a master’s degree in Political Science from l’Université de Montréal and a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration and Political Science from the University of Ottawa.

Dr. Onye Nnorom is a distinguished physician, advocate, public speaker and leader in the field of public health and equity. She is a family doctor and public health and preventive medicine specialist and Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, in Canada. Born in Montreal to parents of Nigerian and Trinidadian backgrounds, she learned at an early age the impact of social injustice and the power of community action. With a deep commitment to social justice and health equity, Dr. Nnorom has dedicated her career to addressing health disparities and improving health outcomes for marginalized communities, with a particular focus on Black populations. Her expertise lies in the intersection of race and health, and she has been instrumental in advancing equitable healthcare practices and medical education policies.

Dr. Nnorom completed her medical training at McGill University, where she developed a passion for community medicine and the importance of addressing social determinants of health. She went on to pursue a Master of Public Health degree at the University of Toronto. Driven by a desire to effect systemic change, Dr. Nnorom has actively advocated for health equity through research and community engagement.

She has led numerous initiatives aimed at reducing health disparities, promoting cultural competency in healthcare, and empowering underserved populations. From 2013-18 was the chronic disease prevention lead at TAIBU Community Health Centre, where she led a number of successful cancer screening initiatives which have been published in peer reviewed journals; the Afrocentric approaches she applied in her community programs are being applied in numerous clinics across Ontario to advance Black women’s health. From 2019-2022, she was the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Lead, within the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. During that time, she was also the President of the Black Physicians' Association of Ontario where she forged a partnership between the BPAO and the DFCM to lead and coordinate vaccine and wellness clinics across Ontario during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Nnorom is the host of a podcast called Race, Health and Happiness where she interviews successful Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color, providing wisdom on how to stay well in a “racialized world”. Dr. Nnorom is the co-founder of the Black Health Education Collaborative, which was established to provide online educational resources on anti-Black racism and Black health for health professional students, clinicians and public health practitioners. She is a mother, a dancer, host of the podcast Race, Health and Happiness, and past president of the Black Physicians' Association of Ontario.

Dr. Onye Nnorom's unwavering dedication to equity and her tireless efforts to create a more just and inclusive healthcare system have earned her widespread recognition and respect within the medical community.

Dr. Mireille Norris is an Internist and Geriatrician at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto. She is the Education Director for the Sunnybrook Hospitalist Training program which she created and implemented at Sunnybrook in 2005. She was appointed Faculty Lead for Black and Indigenous medical learners in 2019 by the department of medicine and is also the site lead for postgraduate geriatric medicine at Sunnybrook. Dr. Norris has a focus of interest in dementia care, fall prevention, quality improvement and medical education. Her interest in under represented physician education has been enhanced by the experience of recruiting and mentoring International Medical Graduates for the Hospitalist Training Program. Her own experience as a Black female French speaking physician was instrumental in empowering her trainees which are now successful in many provinces, the United States and Europe. Dr Norris is eager to bring this experience to her new role as Black Health Theme Lead for the TFOM. Her passion for Equity, Inclusion and Diversity is also reflected in numbers initiatives. They include, participation on the Sunnybrook President Anti-Racist Task force, launching of SPARK (Sunnybrook Program Accessing Research Knowledge) with co-founders and accomplices (Drs Jill Tinmouth, Nick Daneman and Csilla Kalocsai), mentoring membership with the Black Physicians Association of Canada, collaboration with the Network for the Advancement of Black Learners and successful changes to the CaRMS application for core internal medicine which lead to increased inclusivity. She also brings her commitment to service to the Black community at TAIBU and at the Centre Francophone de Toronto.

Dr. Osei-Tutu is a hospitalist and associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the CSM. He is also director of resident support for Postgraduate Medical Education and associate director of Student Advocacy and Wellness for Undergraduate Medical Education. Dr. Osei-Tutu is well established as a provincial and national leader in change transformation. The founder and president of the Black Physicians’ Association of Alberta, he elevates the voices of Black physicians, trainees and learners and is a member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta’s Anti-racism Anti-discrimination Action Committee. He informs the development of policies, educational programs and curricula that are inclusive and has established partnerships with regulatory and licensing bodies to advance health equity.

Dr. Osei-Tutu develops policies and actions that support equity culture and increased diversity of the CSM, including development of a social accountability plan with the Indigenous, Local and Global Health Office leadership team. He champions anti-racism culture while implementing concrete steps to address change within the CSM and beyond.

Dr. Osei-Tutu is at the forefront of emerging concepts in anti-racist, anti-oppressive and culturally safe medical education, and he approaches his work through the lens of intersectionality and compassion. He is a member of the CanMEDS 2025 Steering Committee and was selected to co-chair the CanMEDS 2025 anti-racism expert working group on which he plays a lead role in scholarship and co-creation of new physician competencies related to equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism, anti-oppression and social justice. He has many recent published works and is a co-supervisor in a national research project exploring the ‘sense of belonging’ of equity deserving students in Canadian medical schools.

A trailblazer in systems-level solutions to structural barriers, he conceived, designed, and secured funding for the first national support and reporting mechanism for racialized and other equity-deserving trainees who experience or witness racism or other forms of oppression in the postgraduate medical education environment. He also spearheaded the creation of and serves as a mentor in the Black Physicians’ Association of Alberta provincial mentorship program.

Dr. Osei-Tutu serves as the EDI and Anti-racism strategic advisor for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and is chair of the Canadian Residency Accreditation Consortium Accreditation Working Group to address anti-Black racism in postgraduate medical education. He and his team have advanced the greatest number of new accreditation standards in the history of the accreditation process, set to take effect next year.

Dr. Osei-Tutu earned a degree in Kinesiology from McMaster University, followed by a Master of Science and medical degree at Dalhousie University. He completed a Family Medicine residency at the University of Toronto. He is the recipient of many awards including the 2022 Donald I. Rice Award from the Foundation for Advancing Family Medicine, the 2022 John Ware Fellowship from the DeGroote School of Business, McMaster University, the 2022 Resident Doctors of Canada Puddester Award for Resident Wellness, the 2022 Calgary Black Achievement Award in Medicine and Health and the 2021 Foothills Medical Centre Medical Staff Association Diversity and Inclusion Award.

Cereise Ross is a dedicated lawyer with experience representing employers and employees in employment disputes. With a strong focus on employment law and workplace investigations, she excels at providing strategic solutions and advocating fiercely for her clients.

Cereise helps employers identify areas of improvement in their workplaces, develop policies and procedures to improve their environments, and offers training programs for employees and managers. Cereise also assists employers in responding to and resolving legal disputes with thoughtful negotiation, mediation and litigation strategies. She has a proven track record of achieving favourable outcomes through trials, arbitrations, and mediations.

Cereise also assists employees navigate the complicated and often daunting process of resolving disputes with their employers. Whether she offers advice on a new job offer, or on the terms of a severance package and termination, Cereise’s aim is to provide valuable and cost-effective advice.

All of Cereise’s work is equity-based (“EDI”) and trauma-informed because she understands that legal advice is most useful when it considers the unique circumstances, environments, and needs of her clients.

Prior to joining Turnpenney Milne LLP, Cereise honed her skills at a highly regarded employment law firm, articled at the Ministry of the Attorney General of Ontario – Treasury Board Secretariat, completed a secondment at the LCBO, and as a law student, Cereise was elected as Editor-in-Chief of the Ottawa Law Review.

In her free time, Cereise is committed to volunteering and her activities include offering legal advice through the Ottawa Probono Employment Law Clinic and Black Femme Legal Clinic, mentoring students at various chapters of the Black Law Student Association, and volunteering as a Board member of YouthLink Youth Services.

Dr. Tunde-Byass is a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada and the UK. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Ibadan in 1987. She completed her OBGYN training in the UK and Canada. She received special interest training in Maternal and Fetal Medicine at King’s College, London. UK, and has been an active staff at NYGH since 2004. Dr. Tunde-Byass has held major administrative positions like Residency site coordinator and Interim Chief of OBGYN at NYGH. She is involved in key quality initiatives at the Local and Provincial levels. She was the Co-chair for the Quality Standard on Increasing access to Vaginal Birth After Cesarean section and an expert panel member for Early pregnancy complications and loss (Joint projects of PCMCH and HQO). She has received numerous teachings and innovation awards. She is involved in medical education. Her research interest is in Early pregnancy complications and Quality improvement and patient safety initiatives like decreasing CS rate by increasing access to trial of labour after Caesarean section. She has presented some of her research at international conferences and has publications in peer review journals.

Awards

The Black Physicians of Canada annual awards celebrate Black changemakers from across the country for their significant contributions to health, health care and the medical profession. Providing public recognition of exceptional achievement and service within BPC is an important activity of the organization. The BPC confers awards annually to honour individual luminaries that have demonstrated exemplary leadership. In addition, we recognize individuals whose efforts significantly benefit health and medicine in the Black community.

The first annual BPC Awards are a space where you can nominate your colleagues to be recognized and celebrated for their work.

Black Physicians of Canada Wellness Award

The BPC Wellness Award recognizes a Black physician/fellow/resident/medical student in Canada who has shown dedication to the promotion and advancement of the wellness of physicians, fellows, residents or medical students.

Black Physicians of Canada Community Impact Award

The BPC Community Impact Award recognizes a Black physician/fellow/resident in Canada who demonstrates a dedication to equitable healthcare for Black communities; a commitment to supporting strong and resilient communities; and who values the impact of healthy relationships on the overall health of Black Canadians.

Black Physicians of Canada Mentorship Award

The BPC Mentorship Award recognizes a Black physician, fellow or resident in Canada who exemplifies mentorship by encouraging authenticity and self-respect in their learners; initiates opportunities for growth, empowerment, and organic connections within the learning environment; and honours the balance of being Black in Canada throughout their career. The nominee should also demonstrate an exemplary and sustained commitment to providing outstanding mentorship, guidance, and inspiration to Black mentees. This award acknowledges the time mentors dedicate to provide guidance for career development in clinical work, teaching, education, research, leadership, and advocacy. The dedication of Black mentors fosters the career development and academic success of their colleagues. This award also recognizes the altruistic nature of mentoring. Exceptional Black mentors who have demonstrated through dedicated service, a substantial contribution to mentorship are eligible.

Black Physicians of Canada Clinical Teacher Award

The BPC Clinical Teacher Award recognizes excellence in clinical teaching by a Black physician/fellow/resident. This award emphasizes the importance of clinical teaching in academic medicine. Exceptional Black individuals who demonstrate vision, innovation, and leadership in clinical teaching are eligible.

Black Physicians of Canada National Leadership Award

This award recognizes individuals for their excellence and exemplary national leadership in advancing BPC's vision of uniting, supporting, amplifying and empowering Black physicians, physicians-in-training and the Black community in Canada. Nominees can be any Black physician, fellow, resident, or medical student and should have highly distinguished accomplishments and who have had an extraordinary impact at the national level related to their leadership.

Black Physicians of Canada Resident/Fellow Leadership Award

The BPC Resident/Fellow Leadership Award recognizes a Black resident/fellow in Canada who demonstrates a dedication to leadership within their personal, cultural, and medical communities. The recipient of this award exemplifies the multiple ways leaders help to uplift those around them through supportive relationships; community engagement and initiatives to improve the lives of others; and while acting as a positive role model for their resident and physician colleagues as well as medical students.

Black Physicians of Canada Junior Medical Student Leadership Award (for first and second year medical students only)

The BPC Junior Medical Student Leadership Award recognizes a first or second year Black medical student in Canada who demonstrates a dedication to leadership within their personal, cultural, and medical communities. The recipient of this award exemplifies the multiple ways leaders help to uplift those around them through supportive relationships; community engagement and initiatives to improve the lives of others; and while acting as a positive role model for their peers and prospective medical students.

Black Physicians of Canada Senior Medical Student Leadership Award (for third and fourth year medical students only)

The BPC Senior Medical Student Leadership Award recognizes a third or fourth year Black medical student in Canada who demonstrates a dedication to leadership within their personal, cultural, and medical communities. The recipient of this award exemplifies the multiple ways leaders help to uplift those around them through supportive relationships; community engagement and initiatives to improve the lives of others; and while acting as a positive role model for their peers and prospective medical students.

Black Physicians of Canada Lifetime Achievement Award

The BPC Lifetime achievement award will be given to a retired or practicing Black physician who has achieved distinction by making an outstanding contribution to the Black community, through research/education or advocacy. They will also have advanced the humanitarian or cultural life of the Black community in Canada. The selection committee will consider the following criteria:

Achievement in the area of personal health services, whether through clinical and/or leadership activities;
innovative, creative, and pioneering achievement;
achievement of national scope;
unique contributions by the nominee to that achievement;
positive change over a sustained period – not simply the potential for such change – through the nominee's achievement;
a qualitative and quantitative impact; and
success in overcoming barriers, based on resources available.

We are happy to announce that this poster session will be judged. You will be asked to present a summary of your poster to 2 judges. The presentation will be a short presentation (three to five minute) followed by 2 minutes for questions from the judges. All judged poster presentations will take place during the dedicated poster session on October 13th, 2023 . You will receive confirmation of your presentation time when you receive your acceptance. Poster awards will be presented at the gala on October 14th, 2023.

Submission Guidelines:

This is an opportunity for you to communicate your research to others. Please give your abstract serious consideration and be as clear and precise as possible. Please also structure your abstract with subheadings to clearly display the required sections.

Submissions must include the following information:
